A hard teaching lands only in the one prepared to hold it; the same words fall right through everyone else. This is not favoritism but readiness: an inner truth can be received only where consciousness has been opened to its weight, and to the rest it stays a sound without meaning.

ESOTERIC
A hard teaching lands only in the one prepared to hold it; the same words fall right through everyone else. This is not favoritism but readiness: an inner truth can be received only where consciousness has been opened to its weight, and to the rest it stays a sound without meaning. The saying is given, not grasped, and it is given to the part of a person already ripened enough to take it in.
Understanding of the deeper things is a matter of inward capacity, and a truth arrives only when the one hearing it has grown able to bear what it asks.

SUFISM
Isti'dād: The capacity a person has to receive Ibn Arabi's word for how much room someone has inside for a given truth. A person can hear a hard teaching, agree with every word of it, and still find nothing in themselves that can hold it yet. Hearing that said out loud spares them the strain of pretending to a strength they do not have.
Address people according to what they can understand: teaching is fitted to the hearer A saying of the Prophet that Sufi teachers repeat when deciding how much to say. A person handed a teaching far past their strength tends to turn it into a rule, then break under the rule. A teacher watching for that gives each one the piece they can carry now, and keeps the rest back out of care.
Tawfīq: The help from God that turns willingness into ability The word names the strength that arrives from outside a person's own resolve. Wanting to live a hard teaching and being able to live it are two separate things, and the second one comes as a gift. People who manage the hard thing usually feel it was carried through them, which leaves little to boast about and takes the sting out of the times the strength never came.
None of us but has an appointed place: each one has a set measure A line in the Quran spoken by the angels, which Sufis apply to the ranks people are given. Measuring yourself against someone with a larger portion is the quickest way to lose sight of your own. Once a person accepts that positions differ, they can admire another's calling without needing to have it.
Riḍā: The settled peace a person finds with their own portion Sufis use the word for the moment resentment over one's share goes quiet. Hearing that something is not meant for you can sting like being left out of something everyone else got. When that sting quiets, the portion in your hands looks like enough, and the life you did not get stops pulling at you.
