Matthew 2:14 Meaning He Arose and Took the Young Child

He arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt,

What does Matthew 2:14 mean?

The newborn spiritual self, still tender, is carried down into the density of the body when the surrounding awareness turns dark, kept close to the receptive soul that bore it until the danger of the lower mind passes. Egypt is the physical organism, the land of matter and appetite, and the descent into it is not defeat but shelter; the young seed of higher life hides in flesh until it is strong enough to rise.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The newborn spiritual self, still tender, is carried down into the density of the body when the surrounding awareness turns dark, kept close to the receptive soul that bore it until the danger of the lower mind passes. Egypt is the physical organism, the land of matter and appetite, and the descent into it is not defeat but shelter; the young seed of higher life hides in flesh until it is strong enough to rise. Night is the state of unknowing, and under its cover the growth happens below the surface, unseen.

What reads as a family fleeing is the fragile inner divinity going into the body to be hidden and grown.

Egypt: the physical body and the realm of matter, where the newborn spirit hides and is nourished The mother: the receptive soul that conceives and protects the higher self, never leaving the child it bore Night: the state of unknowing and darkness through which inner growth moves unseen

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Leaving for Egypt by night is the mind's own night-sea crossing, the moment a person carries the newborn whole self down into the deep places within before the old ruler can destroy it.

Herod is the dug-in mind that sees the newly forming center of wholeness as a deadly threat to its rule. Egypt, ancient and older than Christ, is the womb-dark of those shared depths. The flight by night acts out the descent into the deep that shelters the sense of God rather than killing it. In that lightless ocean where dark is hidden within dark, the new center must grow in secret before wholeness can break through into the world.

Live Matthew 2:14 today

  1. Do one small physical thing with full attention today, washing a pan, folding laundry, climbing your stairs. Let that be where the day gets held together instead of your thinking.
  2. Instead of texting someone about something that matters, go sit with them, or call so they hear your voice. Some things only survive in the body.
  3. When a night feels like a dead end, a bad diagnosis, a job gone, a long silence from someone you love, do the next physical thing in front of you. Eat something. Sleep. The dark is not where growth stops.

What in your life is underground right now that you have been calling dead?

Tao Te Ching 66

The sea rules all the streams because it lies lower than every one of them. Going down is how a thing becomes large enough to hold what comes.

Sufism · Rumi

He said the seed has to be buried in the dirt and look finished before anything green appears. Burial and ruin are the same picture from two sides.

Buddhism · mindfulness of the body

The instruction is to bring awareness down into breath, posture, and sensation rather than up into ideas. What is real is grown in the flesh, not in the head.
