Herod's secret meeting is the everyday self sizing up what it cannot take in.

The magi are our own gift for reading the signs that rise from the deep, star-watchers who "saw it at the beginning of the era, and were astonished, and straightway they knew that the most serene King was born in the world." That king is the whole, true self, the sense of God stepping into the light. Herod, the reigning attitude, does not welcome this news openly. He pries out the hour in secret, turning the timing of that birth into a weapon for his own defense. The inner light drives toward wholeness. The tyrant-self intercepts the signal and prepares a killing.

  1. Watch what you do with advice you did not want. If you find yourself gathering details mainly to build a case against it, stop and sit with the possibility that it is simply true.
  2. In a hard conversation today, ask a question you genuinely do not know the answer to, and let the answer land without having a reply ready. You will feel the difference immediately.
  3. When criticism comes at work, resist the quiet project of figuring out who said it and why. Take the content. Leave the investigation.

When you ask questions, how often are you actually gathering ammunition?
