Matthew 2:9 Meaning They

They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was.

What does Matthew 2:9 mean?

The star is the sense of God rising from the deep places, drawing a person's searching heart toward the newly born whole self. The magi leave Herod's court and follow a sign that moves, then rests only at the destination: the mind's bridge at work.

Psychoanalysis

The star is the sense of God rising from the deep places, drawing a person's searching heart toward the newly born whole self.

The magi leave Herod's court and follow a sign that moves, then rests only at the destination: the mind's bridge at work. Working with an inner picture goes the same way, stepping into it and walking toward what lies past the visible ridge until the center shows itself. A person crossing a dark valley toward a faint guiding light does not pick the route. The sign leads. The child at that stillness is wholeness itself, waiting to be recognized by the parts of us that traveled through the dark to find it.

Live Matthew 2:9 today

  1. Stop waiting for the whole plan. Take the one step you can actually see today, make the call, open the document, walk out the door, and trust the next step to show up after it.
  2. Let someone else lead for a stretch, the route, the restaurant, the way they want to handle it. Following a person you trust is its own kind of clarity.
  3. When everything feels dark and you cannot see far, aim at the one small light you can see, the next hour, the next task, the next kind thing, and go there. That is enough direction for today.

What step is right in front of you while you wait to see the rest of the road?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The way is not laid out in advance. Take the next step in the direction you have been given and the road continues to appear.

Sufism · Rumi

As you start to walk the way, the way appears. Begin before you can see where it ends.

Zen

Follow the path in front of you rather than the one you designed. The destination recognizes you, not the other way around.
