Matthew 21:36 Meaning Again

Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they treated them the same way.

What does Matthew 21:36 mean?

The higher power keeps sending inner promptings, and the entrenched lower nature keeps striking them down. The servants are the messengers of the spirit, the urgings toward truth that rise in a person to collect the fruit that is owed, and more than the first means the calls only increase as they are ignored.

Esoteric

The higher power keeps sending inner promptings, and the entrenched lower nature keeps striking them down. The servants are the messengers of the spirit, the urgings toward truth that rise in a person to collect the fruit that is owed, and more than the first means the calls only increase as they are ignored. Doing to them likewise is the hardened caretaking self repeating its refusal, silencing each new prompting exactly as it silenced the last. The pattern is the persistence of grace meeting the persistence of resistance in the same body.

The promptings toward the higher life do not stop coming, and a hardened self does not tire of turning them away. Every fresh call meets the same old refusal, until the lower nature has made rejection its habit.

Servants, more than the first: the repeated messengers and inner urgings of the spirit, sent in growing number to claim the fruit a person owes

  1. Think of the small nudge that has come back to you for months, the call you have not made or the thing you have not said, and do the first two minutes of it before you do anything else.
  2. When someone brings up, for the third time, something they wish you would change, stop explaining and say you heard it, then write it down where you will see it tomorrow.
  3. In the moment you feel yourself reaching for the usual escape, the phone, the snack, the extra tab, pause long enough to feel the reach itself before you decide.

What keeps coming back to me that I keep sending away?

Sufism · Rumi

There is a voice that keeps calling and never gives up on you, the way the ocean keeps sending waves to the same stretch of shore. It is not the calling that stops, it is the listening.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You have been handed the same lesson again and again and set it down each time. How many more mornings do you plan to need?

Dhammapada

What you do twice becomes easier, what you do a hundred times becomes who you are. Refusal hardens into character just as surely as kindness does.
