Matthew 21:40 Meaning When Therefore the Lord of the Vineyard

When therefore the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?

What does Matthew 21:40 mean?

The vineyard is the body and soul planted to bear spiritual fruit, and its owner is the higher self who returns to collect what the ground was made to yield. The husbandmen are the lower faculties, the tenant powers that have taken possession of the body and now refuse to render its fruit to the one it belongs to.

The vineyard is the body and soul planted to bear spiritual fruit, and its owner is the higher self who returns to collect what the ground was made to yield. The husbandmen are the lower faculties, the tenant powers that have taken possession of the body and now refuse to render its fruit to the one it belongs to. The question of what the owner will do is the reckoning that comes when the true master reclaims his field from the servants who acted as if it were their own.

The body cultivated for the higher life cannot be held forever by the appetites that seized it. When the owner comes, the usurping powers that kept the harvest for themselves are cleared out, and the vineyard is returned to the self it was always meant to serve.

Live Matthew 21:40 today

  1. Pick one appetite that has quietly started running your evenings, the scroll, the snack, the next episode, and let tonight go one round without it. You are not punishing yourself, you are checking who is actually in charge.
  2. Ask someone who knows you well what they think has been using up most of your life lately. Then sit with their answer instead of explaining it away.
  3. When you are tired and stressed and the urge comes to snap, numb out, or buy something, pause for one breath and ask what this body was given to you for. Then do the next thing from there.

If your days were handed back to their owner tonight, what would he find has been living in them?

Bhagavad Gita 3

The senses are powerful servants that try to become owners, running the body for their own gratification while the real self looks on. The work is to take the reins back, not to destroy the senses but to put them under the one they were made to serve.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You are not the owner of your house, you are its caretaker, and one day the owner asks for an account of how it was kept. Live as someone who will be asked, not as someone who assumed the place was his to spend.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Craving moves into a person like a tenant who stops paying and starts redecorating, and then calls the house its own. When clear seeing returns, the squatter has no standing, and the house belongs to its keeper again.
