Matthew 22:31 Meaning But Concerning the Resurrection of the Dead

But concerning the resurrection of the dead, haven’t you read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,

What does Matthew 22:31 mean?

The resurrection of the dead is the raising of the sleeping faculties within a person, the powers that lie inert in the flesh as though entombed until awareness rouses them to life. It is never an event promised for the end of the world but a rising that happens inside, the dormant energies of the body called up out of their long sleep and set moving again as living force.

What is spoken by God and asked to be read is the deeper instruction buried in one's own being, the law written within that most have looked at without ever seeing. The whole matter turns on this: the dead are not distant corpses awaiting a far-off day but the numbed and dormant parts of the living self, and their resurrection is the awakening of those parts here and now, in the body that already carries them.

Live Matthew 22:31 today

  1. Pick one thing you do on autopilot today, the first sip of coffee, the walk from the car, washing a dish, and be fully present for just that one minute. The part of you that can be present was there all along, unused.
  2. In one conversation today, put the phone out of reach and give the person your whole attention. Half of us walk around with our attention asleep, and waking it up is a gift the other person feels immediately.
  3. When today gets loud, traffic, a tense meeting, a kid melting down, feel your own feet or the air on your hands for a few seconds. That small return is the whole move, and it works in the middle of the noise, not after it.

What parts of your own life have you been moving through half asleep?

The teachers say the one you are waiting for is the one reading this, already here, already awake enough to look. There is nothing to get, only something to stop sleeping through.

Hinduism · the Upanishads

Wake up, rise, and learn, because the one you are searching for is seated in your own heart. The search travels outward only until it turns around.

Sufism · Rumi

Don't go back to sleep, says the dawn breeze, there is something you were made for and the door is open. Most lives are not broken, only drowsy.
