Matthew 23:16 Meaning Woe to You

Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’

What does Matthew 23:16 mean?

The teachers who lead others have lost inner sight, and their blindness shows in what they weigh as real. The temple is the body itself, the living house where consciousness dwells, and to call it nothing is to worship the ornament while despising the vessel that gives the ornament meaning.

The teachers who lead others have lost inner sight, and their blindness shows in what they weigh as real. The temple is the body itself, the living house where consciousness dwells, and to call it nothing is to worship the ornament while despising the vessel that gives the ornament meaning. Gold is the light of the awakened mind, precious and true, yet a mind that binds itself only to the shine and forgets the body that carries it has reversed the order of value. This is the error of every guide who counts the outward glitter as sacred and the flesh that houses the divine as empty.

Such guidance walks in circles because the one leading cannot see the temple he stands inside.

Blind guides: the outer teachers and reasoning faculties that direct a person yet have lost the inner eye Temple: the human body, the living house where consciousness dwells Gold: the inner light of the awakened mind, the refined value that only means something within its vessel

Live Matthew 23:16 today

  1. Before you reach for your phone in the morning, sit on the edge of the bed for one minute and feel your own weight, your breath, your hands. The body that carries you around all day deserves at least that much of your attention.
  2. Next time you are with someone and catch yourself admiring what they have done, their job, their results, their posts, say something instead about who they are to you. Praise the person, not the shine.
  3. When a deadline is squeezing you and you feel yourself running on coffee and willpower, stop and eat something, drink water, stand up and stretch. The work needs the body that does it, and pushing the body aside to protect the work gets the order backwards.

What are you treating as disposable in order to keep something shiny going?

The spokes and the clay get all the attention, but the wheel works because of the empty hub and the pot because of the hollow inside. What holds a thing is what makes it useful.
