Matthew 23:17 Meaning You Blind Fools

You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

What does Matthew 23:17 mean?

The question exposes an inversion living in the reasoning mind. Gold is the inner light, but the temple, the body, is what makes that light holy by housing it, and the one who prizes the shine above the vessel has mistaken the effect for its source.

The question exposes an inversion living in the reasoning mind. Gold is the inner light, but the temple, the body, is what makes that light holy by housing it, and the one who prizes the shine above the vessel has mistaken the effect for its source. A person can chase the glow of insight while treating his own flesh as worthless, not seeing that the light has no place to be sacred except within the living house that holds it. Foolishness and blindness are here the same condition, a mind so fixed on the precious thing that it cannot see the greater thing that gives the precious thing its worth.

The body sanctifies the light, not the light the body, and the guide who cannot say which is greater has lost his footing at the root.

Gold: the inner light of mind, valuable yet dependent on what contains it Temple: the human body, the house that makes the inner light holy by giving it a place to dwell

Live Matthew 23:17 today

  1. If you had a flash of clarity today, an idea, a realization, something that moved you, write one line of it down somewhere real. Light with no place to land fades by dinner.
  2. When a friend tells you about something they are figuring out, ask how they are actually doing, how they are sleeping, eating, holding up. The insight is not separate from the person having it.
  3. In a meeting where you are trying to sound sharp, let yourself be plain instead. Say the simple version, even if it shines less. The point was never the shine.

Which part of your life have you been calling unimportant while depending on it completely?
