Matthew 23:18 Meaning Whoever Swears by the Altar

‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?’

What does Matthew 23:18 mean?

The altar is the place in the body where offering is made, the seat where energy is surrendered, and to bind oneself by the altar alone is to grasp at the structure while missing what is laid upon it. The gift set on the altar is the living force given up, the actual portion of self that is offered, and this is what carries the weight.

The altar is the place in the body where offering is made, the seat where energy is surrendered, and to bind oneself by the altar alone is to grasp at the structure while missing what is laid upon it. The gift set on the altar is the living force given up, the actual portion of self that is offered, and this is what carries the weight. The lesson turns on where a person fixes their reverence: on the outer platform of ritual or on the inner surrender the platform exists to hold. Attaching oneself to the fixture and ignoring the surrender is empty; the substance is in what is given, not in the stone.

What matters is not the standing place of worship inside a person but the actual life-force laid down upon it.

Live Matthew 23:18 today

  1. If you have a habit you call your practice, the walk, the journal, the quiet ten minutes, ask yourself today whether you are actually giving anything up in it or just keeping the appointment.
  2. The next time you say yes to helping someone, give the part that costs you, your time when you are tired, your attention when you would rather scroll. A favor that costs nothing is a gesture, not a gift.
  3. When you are stressed and clinging to your routine to hold yourself together, let one piece of it go on purpose today. See whether what you were really holding was the routine or something underneath it.

What are you actually giving, under the shape of what you do?
