Matthew 23:33 Meaning You Serpents
You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna?

Matthew 23:33 · World English Bible
You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna?
The serpent is the coiled life-energy at the base of the body, and when it stays turned downward into cunning and venom it becomes the viper, the same power soured toward the lower nature. A brood of vipers is a consciousness wholly given over to that downward, poisonous current.

ESOTERIC
The serpent is the coiled life-energy at the base of the body, and when it stays turned downward into cunning and venom it becomes the viper, the same power soured toward the lower nature. A brood of vipers is a consciousness wholly given over to that downward, poisonous current. The damnation of hell is being bound within the grave-bound flesh, sealed in the lower region with no way up.
While the coiled force keeps its head turned down toward appetite and deceit, it cannot rise; the venomous current has no exit from the low place it feeds. The escape it lacks is the upward turn it refuses to make.
Serpents: the coiled life-energy at the base of the body, turned downward into cunning Vipers: that same inner power soured toward venom and the lower nature Hell: the grave-bound flesh, the lower region a person is sealed within when the energy stays down
Esoteric lens
Where is my energy pointing right now, down into what I want, or up into who I want to be?
The life force is pictured as a coiled serpent at the base of the spine. Left turned downward it simply feeds appetite and keeps a person circling in the same low place; turned upward it becomes the energy of waking up. Same power, two directions.
Craving is described as a creeping vine that grows back wherever it is cut, and the one who feeds it stays bound to sorrow. Nothing is punishing him from outside. He is held by what he keeps watering.
Rumi spoke of the nafs, the lower self, as an animal that only grows stronger on what you feed it. Starve it of the thing it wants and the same strength begins to carry you instead of drag you.
