Matthew 23:34 Meaning Therefore Behold

Therefore behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;

What does Matthew 23:34 mean?

Prophets, wise men, and scribes are the higher faculties sent up into a person's own awareness: the prophet the intuitive seeing that speaks ahead of the senses, the wise man the settled understanding, the scribe the ordering intelligence that records and interprets. That these are killed, crucified, and scourged is the lower nature putting to death its own finer powers whenever they threaten its comfort, the flesh silencing the very insight that would raise it.

The persecution from city to city is this resistance driving those faculties from one center of thought to the next, giving them no place to rest inside the mind.

What happens is a self at war with its own higher gifts, striking down the messengers that rise within it. The rejection is internal: the crude self extinguishing the light it was meant to receive.

Prophets: the intuitive seeing within a person that speaks ahead of the senses Wise men: the settled inner understanding that grasps the truth of things Scribes: the ordering intelligence that records and interprets within the mind Synagogues: the gathering places of thought inside the person, where the higher faculties are scourged City: a fixed center of thought and habit the mind builds, one of many a person moves among

  1. Something sensible occurred to you this week and you let it slide. Write it down in your notes app in one plain line, so it has somewhere to stay instead of being run out of town.
  2. When a friend or your partner says the quiet true thing, don't change the subject and don't make a joke. Say back what you heard them say, then let it sit there.
  3. Under deadline pressure, the first casualty is your own better judgment about how this should be done. Before you cut the corner, give that judgment thirty seconds of real hearing instead of shoving it out of the room.

Which good thought have I been chasing from one corner of my mind to another instead of letting it settle?

Tao Te Ching 41

The highest teaching is laughed at when it is first heard, and the one who hears it and does nothing is no better off than the one who never heard. The wisdom arrives; the resistance meets it at the door.

Buddhism · the Buddha

The Buddha warned against the second arrow, the one we fire into ourselves after the first wound lands. The teaching that could heal us is often the one we chase away so we can keep hold of our story.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus told himself that if anyone could show him he was wrong he would gladly change, since no one is harmed by the truth, while the person who clings to his own error harms himself. The correction only hurts the part that refuses it.
