Matthew 24:26 · World English Bible
If therefore they tell you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ don’t go out; or ‘Behold, he is in the inner rooms,’ don’t believe it.
The desert is the dry confusion of the lower mind, and being sent out into it to find the sacred is being sent into disorientation, away from the settled centers where the work belongs. Secret chambers are the hidden rooms of the brain, but pointed at by another voice they become a lure, a promise that the divine is stored in some inner compartment a guide can unlock for a fee.

ESOTERIC
The desert is the dry confusion of the lower mind, and being sent out into it to find the sacred is being sent into disorientation, away from the settled centers where the work belongs. Secret chambers are the hidden rooms of the brain, but pointed at by another voice they become a lure, a promise that the divine is stored in some inner compartment a guide can unlock for a fee. Both directions, the barren waste outside and the whispered inner room, move a person off their own axis and toward someone else's claim.
What is being warned against is the salesman of the sacred, the one who profits by placing the divine anywhere a seeker must be led to. The sacred is not fetched from a wilderness or bought from a keeper of chambers; the reaching itself, done within, is the whole of it.
Desert: the dry confusion of the lower mind, a barren stretch a seeker is lured into Secret chambers: the hidden rooms of the brain, offered falsely as a locked place another can open

Without going out the door, you can know the whole world. The one who runs to the far places to find it keeps arriving late.
