Matthew 24:28 · World English Bible
For wherever the carcass is, that is where the vultures gather together.
When the spirit in a person has gone dead, the state becomes a carcass, and predators gather to it as surely as birds drop onto a body left in the open. The eagles are the exploiters of the broken, the sellers of healing and the peddlers of the sacred who read a dead inner life the way scavengers read a scent, and they collect wherever they find one.

ESOTERIC
When the spirit in a person has gone dead, the state becomes a carcass, and predators gather to it as surely as birds drop onto a body left in the open. The eagles are the exploiters of the broken, the sellers of healing and the peddlers of the sacred who read a dead inner life the way scavengers read a scent, and they collect wherever they find one. A person emptied of the rising current gives off the signal of prey, and it is the deadness itself that summons them; nothing living draws that circling.
The gathering is automatic, a law of the condition. Let the spirit lie down inside and the takers arrive, because a carcass in the open is what calls them in.
Carcase: the dead spirit in a person, an inner life gone lifeless and left exposed Eagles: the scavengers of the broken, exploiters who gather to a dead spirit as birds drop to a body

When you feel most empty, who tends to show up, and what do they want from you?
What is full of life is not preyed upon. Wasps and serpents leave the infant alone, because vitality itself is a kind of protection.
The teaching on the near enemies describes how pity dressed as compassion and clinging dressed as love move in exactly where a person is weakest. The imitation arrives because the opening is there.
Epictetus said that what harms you is not the event but your judgment about it. The one who has given up their own judgment has handed every passerby the reins.
