The Son of man is the awakened self rising within the crown of the head, the higher mind returning to rule where the lower mind long sat. Heaven is not overhead but the upper chamber of consciousness, and the clouds are the dimming thoughts that gather just before that inner light breaks through them. When it comes, the scattered tribes of the earth grieve because the earth is the body and its tribes are the many divided desires that ruled a person; each one mourns the loss of its old dominion.

The great glory is the flood of clear awareness filling the mind. What arrives is your own true self taking its throne, and every lesser part of you feels the ground shift as it does.

Son of man: the awakened higher self forming within, the true ruler returning to the mind Heaven: the upper chamber of consciousness inside the skull, not a place above the world Clouds: the darkened, crowding thoughts that mass just before inner light breaks through Tribes of the earth: the many divided desires and appetites of the body, each losing its rule

Live Matthew 24:30 today

  1. Today, when a craving speaks in the first person, the scroll or the snack or the snapping back, hear it as one small voice in the house rather than as you. Let it be disappointed.
  2. In a conversation where you usually perform a version of yourself, say one plain true thing instead. Note how much of you protests.
  3. Under pressure, when some part of you wants to take the wheel with heat or sarcasm, breathe once and answer from the calm that is also you. The loud part will grieve. Let it.

Which part of you is most afraid of you becoming who you actually are?

When Arjuna finally sees the whole of what is real, he shakes and asks for the ordinary face back. The arrival of the true is awe and grief at once.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The self is described as the king of the senses, the one for whom eyes and hands and appetite all work. When that king takes the seat, the servants stop ruling the house.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi writes of dying to the smaller self so the larger one can live. Every part of you that had a kingdom mourns the day the real owner comes home.
