Matthew 24:6 Meaning You Will Hear of Wars and Rumors

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you aren’t troubled, for all this must happen, but the end is not yet.

What does Matthew 24:6 mean?

Wars and rumors of wars are the conflicts inside a person as the awakening begins, the clash between spirit and flesh and the endless noise of the lower mind that never stops reporting trouble. To hear of them and not be troubled is to stand as the observing consciousness above the battle, watching the disturbance without being pulled into it.

These upheavals must come because no one crosses from the outer nature to the inner without struggle; the fighting is the friction of transformation itself.

The end is not yet because the inner war is a passage and not the destination, a stage the seeker moves through rather than the completion. The turmoil is real and necessary, and staying calm within it is the whole discipline of the one who is passing over.

  1. Next time your chest tightens at a notification, don't open it for sixty seconds. Feel the pull, watch it crest, and then decide from the quieter side of it.
  2. When someone brings you worry secondhand, the thing they heard that might happen, listen all the way without matching their pitch. You can care about them without joining the panic.
  3. In a meeting or a message thread that turns sharp, say one plain sentence and then stop. Staying steady when things are loud is the whole of the work, and it does not require you to win the exchange.

What am I treating as an emergency that is only loud?

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Marcus reminded himself that we are disturbed not by events but by our opinions about them. The alarm bell rings on its own; whether you run is up to you.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The mind is restless, hard to guard and hard to restrain, and the wise straighten it as a fletcher straightens an arrow. The leaping is not a sign of failure. It is simply what an untrained mind does while it is being trained.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching

The sage is content to be murky like troubled water and does not reach in to fix it. Left alone it settles and clears, and the stillness you wanted was going to arrive on its own.
