Matthew 25:31 Meaning But When the Son of Man Comes

But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory.

What does Matthew 25:31 mean?

The image of the one who comes in glory to take the throne is the picture of the ideal itself arriving to judge. Something stands above a man, and it evaluates him, and no amount of denial makes that evaluation go away.

The image of the one who comes in glory to take the throne is the picture of the ideal itself arriving to judge. Something stands above a man, and it evaluates him, and no amount of denial makes that evaluation go away. The throne is the place from which every act is finally weighed against what he could have been. To live as though nothing sits over you is the oldest delusion, and it never lasts.

The glory belongs to the pattern a person is meant to embody, the standard he already senses even when he refuses it. That is why conscience feels like being seen. When the highest good takes its seat, the accounts come due, and a wrong excused as virtue weighs heaviest of all. Order yourself now toward the thing you know is above you, before it arrives to ask what you did with your days.

Live Matthew 25:31 today

  1. Think of one thing you do only because nobody sees it, and stop doing it today. Start there, not with something grand.
  2. When you are about to say something about a person who is not in the room, say only what you would say to their face.
  3. In the moment you could cut a corner and get away with it, do it properly instead, even though it costs you fifteen minutes.

If my days were read back to me tonight, which part would I want to explain away?

Live as if you could be called to account at any hour, because you can. The standard does not care whether you believe in it.

Pirkei Avot

Know what is above you: a seeing eye, a hearing ear, and all your deeds written down. Conscience is that knowledge, felt.
