Matthew 25:32 · World English Bible

Matthew 25:32 Meaning Before Him All the Nations Will Be

Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

What does Matthew 25:32 mean?

The nations gathered are the many states and impulses within a person, the whole population of feelings and drives assembled before the discerning self. To separate them is the inner work of discrimination, awareness sorting its own contents by their quality rather than judging people in a distant world.

The nations gathered are the many states and impulses within a person, the whole population of feelings and drives assembled before the discerning self. To separate them is the inner work of discrimination, awareness sorting its own contents by their quality rather than judging people in a distant world. The sheep are the gentle, following energies, the parts of a person that yield to the higher current and move with it. The goats are the willful, self-butting impulses, the appetites that climb and resist and push against the finer nature. The shepherd is the awakened self, the presence that knows one from the other in its own field.

What takes place is a sorting inside one person: the discerning self weighs its own impulses and divides the yielding from the resistant.

All nations: the many states and impulses within a person, the full population of feelings gathered for weighing Shepherd: the awakened self that knows and sorts its own inner contents Sheep: the gentle, following energies that yield to the higher current and move with it Goats: the willful, self-butting impulses and appetites that resist the finer nature

Live Matthew 25:32 today

  1. When an urge shows up today, to snap back, to scroll, to check again, pause one second and ask which part of you wants it. You are not stopping it, just seeing clearly which voice is talking.
  2. In a conversation, catch the impulse to defend yourself before it comes out of your mouth. One heartbeat is enough to tell the gentle response from the butting one.
  3. Under pressure, when the reply is already typed, read it once and ask if you would want to receive it. Then decide which of your impulses gets to speak for you.

Which of my impulses have I been letting lead without ever looking at it?

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Watch the mind the way a herder watches the flock, knowing each one. The work is sorting your own thoughts, not the people around you.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The mind is a friend to the one who has worked with it and an enemy to the one who has not. The same mind, divided by whether it has been trained.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You can step back and look at your own impulses before you obey them. That pause, where you see the push and decline to be pushed, is where a person is actually free.
