Matthew 25:36 · World English Bible

Matthew 25:36 Meaning I Was Naked

I was naked, and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison, and you came to me.’

What does Matthew 25:36 mean?

Nakedness, sickness, and imprisonment are the shapes guilt takes when the mind believes it has been abandoned. To clothe, to visit, to come near is not to fix a body but to refuse the story that anyone can be beyond the reach of love.

Christian Psychology

Nakedness, sickness, and imprisonment are the shapes guilt takes when the mind believes it has been abandoned. To clothe, to visit, to come near is not to fix a body but to refuse the story that anyone can be beyond the reach of love. The prison has no walls the mind did not build, and the visitor who enters brings the one thing that dissolves them, which is the willingness to see innocence where condemnation stood.

A mind that draws near to what seems shameful or sick learns that distance was the only sickness. There is nothing to cure but the belief in separation itself. Every approach undoes a little of the exile, until the one who was locked away is simply seen as never having been cast out at all.

Naked: the mind stripped bare by its own sense of guilt, believing itself exposed and unworthy Sick: the appearance of a mind that thinks love has withdrawn from it Prison: the cell of guilt the mind constructs, walls made only of the belief that it stands condemned

Live Matthew 25:36 today

  1. Think of the person you have been avoiding because the situation is heavy, a diagnosis, a divorce, a job loss. Write the message today, even a clumsy one, instead of waiting for better words.
  2. When someone tells you something hard over coffee or on the phone, resist the urge to fix it. Stay in the room with them for one more minute than feels comfortable.
  3. When you catch yourself replaying a thing you did wrong, speak to yourself the way you would speak to a friend in that cell. The judgment keeping you locked in is the only lock there is.

Where are you keeping your distance and calling it giving someone space?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Vimalakirti Sutra

When asked about his illness, the sage answered that he was sick because the world was sick. Nearness to suffering, not distance from it, is the mark of a healed mind.

Stoicism · Seneca

We are limbs of one body, made for each other. To turn from a person in trouble is to turn against a part of yourself.

Judaism · Talmud

Visiting the sick takes away a portion of the illness. Simply being present does what no remedy alone can do.
