Matthew 26:31 Meaning Then Jesus Said to Them

Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me tonight, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

What does Matthew 26:31 mean?

When the higher self is struck and lowered, the ordinary faculties lose their center and scatter, for the shepherd is the governing spirit within and the sheep are the many thoughts and powers it gathers and leads. This night is the dark interval of the inner ordeal, the passage through which the central awareness is brought down and the parts that depended on it are left without direction, drifting apart.

Esoteric

When the higher self is struck and lowered, the ordinary faculties lose their center and scatter, for the shepherd is the governing spirit within and the sheep are the many thoughts and powers it gathers and leads. This night is the dark interval of the inner ordeal, the passage through which the central awareness is brought down and the parts that depended on it are left without direction, drifting apart. The offence is the collapse of the surface self's confidence the moment its guiding presence is stricken. What happens in a person is plain: remove the inner governor and the mind's flock breaks up and wanders, each impulse running its own way until the center is restored.

Night: the dark interval of the inner ordeal, the passage in which the guiding self is brought low. Shepherd: the governing spirit within, the central awareness that gathers and leads the faculties. Sheep: the many thoughts and powers of the person, the flock that scatters when its center is struck.

Live Matthew 26:31 today

  1. Count how many directions your attention went in the last hour, the tabs, the pings, the half thoughts. That is the flock without a shepherd.
  2. When a group chat or a family argument starts pulling everyone apart, be the one who stays steady and says one calm thing. A single center gathers the rest.
  3. On a day that knocks you sideways, stop for sixty seconds before you answer anything. Come back to your center first, then deal with the scattering.

When I feel pulled in ten directions, what has actually gone missing from the middle of me?

Tao Te Ching 26

The heavy is the root of the light, and the one who stays centered can travel without losing themselves. Lose the center and everything scatters.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Keep hold of the ruling part of you and outside events cannot disperse you. Let it go and every impression drags you somewhere else.

Buddhism

An untended mind runs in all directions like loose cattle. The herd is not the problem, the missing herder is.
