But Jesus held his peace. The high priest answered him, “I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God.”
When you are attacked, the mind rushes to defend itself, to justify, to prove who you are. But there is a deeper response, and it is stillness.

EGO & BEING
When you are attacked, the mind rushes to defend itself, to justify, to prove who you are. But there is a deeper response, and it is stillness. To hold your peace in the face of accusation is not weakness. It is the sign that who you are no longer depends on the opinions of others.
The high priest wants a label, an identity he can grasp. Yet what you truly are cannot be captured in any answer. By staying silent, you remain rooted in the presence that no accusation can touch, and so the attack finds nothing in you to wound.

ESOTERIC
The silence of the inner Christ before the accuser is the stillness of the awakened self that does not argue with the lower mind. The high priest is the ego enthroned in the temple of the body, the ruling personality that demands proof and interrogates the very light it should serve. It calls upon the living God while failing to recognize the anointed one standing silent before it. The Son of God is the human being who has raised the inner fire and knows its own divine origin.
The lower ruler presses for an answer the higher self will not give in words. Stillness itself is the reply, the calm center that owes no explanation to the mind that doubts it.
High priest: the ego crowned in the temple of the body, the ruling personality that interrogates and demands proof of the light within Temple: the physical body, the sanctuary in which the drama of high self and lower ruler is played out Son of God: the awakened human who has raised the inner fire and knows its own divine source

BUDDHISM
Tuṇhībhāva: Noble Silence Silence held as a complete answer. Bound in a night courtroom where the verdict has already been agreed among the chief priests, any word would hand them more rope, so the mouth stays closed while the man stays fully present. The stillness does the work that speech would only spoil.
Avyākata: Questions Left Undeclared Certain questions get put down rather than answered, because the frame they come in is crooked. "Whether you are the Christ" arrives from a man who has already fixed what those words mean and what he will do with them, so a yes inside his definitions would be answering something else entirely. Setting the question down leaves it with its asker, where it belongs.
Papañca: Runaway Labeling The mind's habit of spinning a name out into a whole world of claims. "The Christ, the Son of God" comes as a title with a trial attached, a box built in advance with a man to be fitted inside it. Declining to say the words leaves the box empty, and the one who built it has to fill it himself, which is exactly what he does in the next breath.
Khanti: Patient Endurance Bearing what lands without passing it on. Sworn at by the name of the living God, pressed by the highest authority in the room to speak, he takes the whole weight of that oath and hands none of it back. Endurance like this looks from outside like weakness and from inside like a man carrying a heavy load and refusing to set it down on anyone else.
Aṭṭha Lokadhammā: The Eight Worldly Winds Praise and blame, honor and disgrace, blowing through and passing on. The entire room is arranged to turn a teacher into a blasphemer in a single sentence, and the wind is at full strength with the high priest's robes and the whole council behind it. A mountain does not lean when the wind hits it, and the quiet standing there in the middle of the court is what that looks like in a person.
Ego v. Being lens
What in you needs other people to agree about who you are?
The one who makes no claim for himself is not diminished, because there is nothing there for anyone to knock down. Self defense is what creates something to defend.
He told his students that when someone insults you, the sting comes from your own judgment that it matters. Without that judgment the insult simply passes through.
The sages said a word is best weighed in silence, and that silence is the fence around wisdom. Not every accusation is owed an answer.
