Matthew 26:69 Meaning Now Peter Was Sitting Outside

Now Peter was sitting outside in the court, and a maid came to him, saying, “You were also with Jesus, the Galilean!”

What does Matthew 26:69 mean?

Peter is the faculty of faith and conviction in a person, and here it sits outside, in the courtyard rather than in the sanctuary, awareness lingering in the outer regions while the higher center is being tried within. To sit without is the position of a conviction that has not entered the temple of its own body, kept at the perimeter by fear.

The damsel who names his connection is the small prompting voice of recognition, the flicker of conscience that identifies where a person truly belongs. Galilee, whose name carries the sense of a circuit or wheel, is the region of ongoing spiritual movement, and to have been with the anointed of that place is to be marked as belonging to the awakening current.

The scene shows the believing faculty exposed at the edge, still outside the inner chamber, met by a quiet recognition of where it really stands while its courage falters.

Peter: the faculty of faith and conviction within a person, here left sitting outside the sanctuary Palace: the outer court of awareness, the perimeter where consciousness waits apart from the inner temple Damsel: the small prompting voice of recognition and conscience that names where one belongs Galilee: the region of circuit and movement, the wheel of ongoing spiritual activity

Live Matthew 26:69 today

  1. If there is something you keep meaning to sit with, five quiet minutes, a prayer, a hard honest look at your life, do it today in whatever gap you have. You have been in the courtyard about it for a while now.
  2. When someone says "you seem like you care about this" and you feel the urge to shrug it off, do not. Say yes, out loud, because downplaying it is how you stay outside your own life.
  3. In a room where it would cost you something to be known as the kind of person you actually are, do not go vague. One plain sentence, no speech, and you have stepped in from the edge.

Where am I standing just outside something I already belong to?

Tao Te Ching 47

Without going out the door you can know the whole world, because the thing you are looking for is not outside. Standing at the edge, you can only hear what is happening inside.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The practice is in sitting down, not in circling the room. What keeps a person at the perimeter is almost always fear, not distance.
