What does Matthew 27:35 mean?

The higher self is fixed upon the 4-part frame of matter, the spirit pinned onto the crossing of the body's own axes where it hangs bound to the material world. Crucifixion is what happens to consciousness when it descends into flesh and is nailed to the 4 directions of physical existence.

The higher self is fixed upon the 4-part frame of matter, the spirit pinned onto the crossing of the body's own axes where it hangs bound to the material world. Crucifixion is what happens to consciousness when it descends into flesh and is nailed to the 4 directions of physical existence.

The garments are the outer coverings of that self, the body and its lower sheaths, and they are stripped away and divided among the coarse powers that gamble for the flesh. The seamless inner robe, the whole unbroken life, is what the raffling world contends for once the spirit is fastened to matter and its outer wrappings fall to the forces below.

The cross: the 4-part frame of the material world onto which spirit is fastened when it enters the body Garments: the body and outer sheaths that clothe the higher self and are stripped from it in matter Vesture: the seamless inner robe, the whole undivided life the lower powers gamble to possess

  1. When you catch yourself checking how you came across today, in a photo, a message you sent, a meeting you spoke in, name it as the outer layer and let the crowd have it. You are not what is on display.
  2. If someone divides you up today, praising one part and dismissing another, or talking about you to others, let them hold the pieces and keep your own sense of yourself whole in your hands.
  3. In a week where the job, the money or the health news strips something away, stay with the question of what is still intact underneath, and answer it honestly rather than defending the covering.

What part of me have I been treating as the whole thing, when it is only the clothing?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita 2

The body is a garment the deeper self puts on and lays aside. What is worn can be torn or taken; the wearer is untouched.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Your body, your reputation, your position: borrowed clothing, on loan and recallable. The part of you that chooses is the only thing fully yours.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

People fight over the outer shape and miss the life inside it. The useful, whole thing is never the part the crowd is bidding on.
