Matthew 27:34 Meaning They Gave Him Sour Wine to Drink

they gave him sour wine to drink mixed with gall. When he had tasted it, he would not drink.

What does Matthew 27:34 mean?

At the height of the inner ordeal the awakening consciousness is offered the soured and bitter portion, the concentrated dregs of resentment and the body's poison, and it tastes but refuses to take it in. The higher self will register the bitterness pressed on it by the lower nature yet declines to be sustained by it, refusing to let the crucifixion be numbed or feed on gall.

Esoteric

At the height of the inner ordeal the awakening consciousness is offered the soured and bitter portion, the concentrated dregs of resentment and the body's poison, and it tastes but refuses to take it in. The higher self will register the bitterness pressed on it by the lower nature yet declines to be sustained by it, refusing to let the crucifixion be numbed or feed on gall. This is the moment the rising awareness holds its own quality, sampling what the body and the world push toward it without swallowing it as nourishment.

Vinegar: wine gone sour, the fermented remains of joy turned to bitterness in the body. Gall: the concentrated bitterness of the flesh, the poison the lower nature offers to dull the rising awareness.

Live Matthew 27:34 today

  1. When something bitter lands in your head today, an old grudge, a replay of who wronged you, let yourself feel the sting for a few seconds and then set the cup down instead of sipping it for an hour.
  2. If someone hands you a sharp comment at dinner or in a group chat, take it in, see clearly how bitter it is, and answer from somewhere other than that bitterness. You do not owe it a matching reply.
  3. Under pressure at work, when the easy relief is a cynical joke or a run of complaining that makes you feel better for five minutes, skip the numbing drink and stay awake inside the hard hour.

What bitter thing have I been living on lately because it was the nearest comfort?

Bhagavad Gita 2

The one who is steady can let a feeling pass through without being moved by it. Sensation arrives, is known for what it is, and is not taken in as food for the self.

Stoicism · Epictetus

What hurts you is not the harsh thing handed to you but your agreement to swallow it. You can hold a bitter remark in view and decline to make it your diet.

Zen

A sour taste on the tongue is only a sour taste. Trouble starts when you keep drinking it all afternoon.
