When evening came, they brought to him many possessed with demons. He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick;

What does Matthew 8:16 mean?

Psychoanalysis

Evening is the hour when the daylight, managing mind loosens its grip and everything below the surface rises up. Just then the suffering are carried, like waking fever-dreams, to the healer at the edge of night. What the crowd calls being possessed is a person overrun by forces inside that were never faced and so come back feeling like something alien. Their suffering is real before it means anything.

The old word for spirit also meant breath, so a single word names both the trouble and the cure. The one spoken word is order made audible: a clear command that draws the exiled, rejected part of a person back home and makes each one whole again.

  1. Tonight when the day's busyness drops and the heavy thoughts come up, do not reach for your phone to drown them out. Sit with one of them for two minutes and say out loud what it actually is.
  2. When someone in the group chat or at dinner says the ugly thing they have been carrying, do not rush to fix or flinch. Say, that makes sense, tell me more, and let them be whole in front of you.
  3. Next time something in you flares up at work and feels like it came from nowhere, take one slow breath and ask what old thing just got touched. Breath and spirit have always been the same word.

What part of me have I been treating like a stranger?

Mind leads everything, and what a person does with a troubled mind follows him like the wheel follows the ox. The cure begins in the mind, not in the thing feared.

Taoism · Tao Te Ching

Soft words settle what force only stirs up. One quiet, true thing said can undo a storm that shouting made worse.

Sufism · Rumi

He called the human chest a guest house where grief and shame and rage all arrive as visitors. Greet each one at the door instead of barring it, because every one of them was sent to clear room inside you.
