Psychoanalysis

A rejected part of us that gets pushed out of awareness does not simply vanish. It needs a new home, and the nearest home is always the mindless crowd. The herd, busy feeding at a distance from the showdown on the road, stands for blind instinct with no self-awareness: the faceless many moving as one body, not yet called toward wholeness.

Just as we grasp the totally strange only by comparing it to the nearest familiar thing, this cast-off force, once shaken loose from the two men by the approach of wholeness, has to find a body that lives by appetite rather than awareness. The distance itself, quiet pigs on a hillside while the crisis plays out below, is the gap between seeing your own faults in something outside you and the first flicker of taking them back inside.

Live Matthew 8:30 today

  1. Catch yourself mid-scroll tonight and ask what you actually came to the phone for. Not to stop, just to see the pull for what it is.
  2. In the group chat where everyone has already decided how to feel about something, hold your own read a moment longer before you add the same reaction everyone else did.
  3. In the grocery line or on the commute, let the thing that irritates you about the stranger in front of you point back at you. Ask quietly whether you know that trait from the inside.

Where am I letting the crowd carry something I should be carrying myself?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The crowd is bright and sure of itself, busy and well fed. The one on the way looks dull and alone by comparison, and that solitude is the whole difference.

Stoicism · Seneca

Nothing undoes a person faster than drifting with the crowd. What everyone is doing at once is never, by that fact, the thing worth doing.

Buddhism

Appetite runs on by itself, fed and feeding, unless someone turns and looks at it. Plain attention is what the herd has none of.
