Matthew 8:31 Meaning The Demons Begged Him

The demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of pigs.”

What does Matthew 8:31 mean?

What we cast out of ourselves does not dissolve. It only looks for a new container.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

What we cast out of ourselves does not dissolve. It only looks for a new container. The men shut away in the tombs bore real suffering before any of this was faced. The healer stands before rejected material of downright demonic force, the kind of energy that, when crushed down inside a person, floods into the nearest available form.

Darkness and light lean on each other like two ends of one pole. Where the dark presses outward, the whole pays the price, seen here in the pigs rushing into the sea. Pushing a fault onto something outside you without ever taking it back inside produces exactly this picture of collapse, because what has been thrown out finds no steady home and destroys whatever it briefly lives in.

Live Matthew 8:31 today

  1. Think of the thing you still replay at night and let yourself off it once, out loud or under your breath. Not excusing it, just stopping the sentence.
  2. Message the friend who has gone quiet and offer something specific: a ride, an hour, dinner Thursday. Carry them a little without asking them to explain why they are stuck.
  3. When you make the mistake in front of everyone at work today, speak to yourself the way you would to a friend who just did the same thing.

What am I still holding against myself that keeps me from moving?

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi tells of a man so frightened of his own shadow that he ran from it until he dropped dead, when all he needed was to sit down in the shade. What you throw off does not leave on its own.

Buddhism

Mara is never destroyed, only recognized. Driven out of one form he comes back wearing another, until he is seen plainly for what he is.

Sufism · Rumi

The grasping self is a dragon that only looks frozen. Starve it in one place and it feeds in another, so it has to be known and trained rather than banished.
