Matthew 9:33 Meaning When the Demon Was Cast Out

When the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke. The multitudes marveled, saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”

What does Matthew 9:33 mean?

When silence comes not from the body but from the parts of a person they have pushed away, it is the true voice held captive by a knot of buried feeling. There was a patient silent for five years who, once speech returned, could not say what had kept him mute, because the barrier had lived entirely below his awareness.

Psychoanalysis

When silence comes not from the body but from the parts of a person they have pushed away, it is the true voice held captive by a knot of buried feeling. There was a patient silent for five years who, once speech returned, could not say what had kept him mute, because the barrier had lived entirely below his awareness. The demon here is such a knot, a splitting-off that seizes the whole instrument of speech.

Driving it out is wholeness reclaiming what those rejected parts had swallowed, and speech returns like a child suddenly naming a long-held fear. The crowd's amazement is the everyday mind recognizing that wholeness has broken through, the inner cup at last saying plainly what the soul is meant to become.

Live Matthew 9:33 today

  1. Write down the thing you have never put into words, not for anyone to read. Some knots only come loose once they have language.
  2. When someone you love goes quiet on something hard, do not fill the air. Ask one gentle question and then wait. Your waiting is what lets them speak.
  3. In a tense exchange, when you catch yourself saying everything except the real thing, stop and say, "Actually, here is what I'm afraid of." The words will feel too plain. Use them anyway.

What in me has been mute so long I forgot it had a voice?
