Esoteric

The ass is the body, the patient animal nature that carries a person and that sees the messenger of the higher law before the reasoning mind does. Balaam is that mind, the willful intellect bent on its own course, blind to what the instinctive nature already perceives. The body falls down beneath its rider because it feels the presence the intellect cannot yet see, and the mind, thwarted, beats the very vehicle that is trying to save it. The staff is the rod of the driving will, striking the flesh for obeying a truth deeper than the mind's plan.

What the body knows before the mind admits it is the boundary set by the higher law, and the willful intellect punishes the flesh for stopping short of its own error.

Ass: the patient animal body that carries a person and senses the higher law first Angel of the LORD: the messenger of the higher law standing in the way of the mind's course Staff: the rod of the driving will, striking the flesh for obeying what the mind cannot see

  1. When your body simply stops, heavy and slow in the middle of the afternoon, give it twenty minutes instead of another coffee and a harder push. Lie down, look at the ceiling, let the stopping be allowed.
  2. If someone close to you goes quiet and still in a conversation, do not talk louder. Ask what is happening, and wait through the silence without filling it.
  3. Under a deadline, when you catch yourself gritting through a headache and calling it discipline, name it out loud as what it is. Then choose the next step with that fact included instead of hidden.

What have I been punishing in myself for trying to protect me?

Buddhism

The body is one of the places where awareness is trained, because it reports what is true while the mind is still building a story. Sitting with the breath and the limbs is how you learn to hear that report.

Water does not shove its way through stone, it goes around. The way that forces itself forward exhausts itself, and the one who adapts arrives.
