Numbers 31:10 Meaning All Their Cities in the Places

All their cities in the places in which they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire.

What does Numbers 31:10 mean?

Spirit sweeps through the settled structures of the lower mind and consumes them. The cities a person has built are the fixed clusters of thought and habit that consciousness has come to dwell in, and the goodly castles are the proud fortified beliefs raised over a lifetime.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Spirit sweeps through the settled structures of the lower mind and consumes them. The cities a person has built are the fixed clusters of thought and habit that consciousness has come to dwell in, and the goodly castles are the proud fortified beliefs raised over a lifetime. When the fire of spirit rises, these are not preserved; they are burned to the ground, every dwelling of the old mind given over to flame. What looks like slaughter in the plain story is the inner combustion by which spirit clears away the entrenched patterns a person had made a home.

The strongholds of accustomed thinking, however handsome and well-defended, cannot survive contact with the higher energy; they are reduced so that nothing of the old settlement remains to be lived in.

Fire: spirit, the burning higher energy that consumes whatever the lower mind has built Cities: the settled clusters of thought and habit the mind comes to dwell in

Live Numbers 31:10 today

  1. Pick one opinion you have defended for years and spend ten minutes today trying to argue the other side honestly. If it holds up without your defending it, fine. If not, let it go.
  2. In your next real conversation, when you feel the familiar line coming out of your mouth for the hundredth time, stop and ask a question instead. Let the other person tell you something you did not already have filed.
  3. When a plan you built falls apart and the ground goes out from under you, resist rebuilding the same structure that afternoon. Live in the empty space for a day before you put up new walls.

Which of my certainties am I living inside rather than looking at?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

Before anything new can be poured in, the cup has to be emptied. A mind already full of its own certainties has no room left to learn.

Tao Te Ching 11

The room is useful because of the empty space, not the walls. What you clear out is what makes the place livable.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The habits of thought a person lives in feel like home until they are seen for what they are. Waking up means leaving a house you were comfortable in.
