Proverbs 1:12 Meaning Let’s Swallow Them Up Alive Like Sheol

Let’s swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit.

What does Proverbs 1:12 mean?

To swallow another alive is the ego's dream of wholeness bought by consuming what lies outside itself. A mind that feels empty imagines it can be filled by taking someone in, by making an enemy disappear the way the grave takes the living down.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

To swallow another alive is the ego's dream of wholeness bought by consuming what lies outside itself. A mind that feels empty imagines it can be filled by taking someone in, by making an enemy disappear the way the grave takes the living down. The hunger is real, but it is aimed in exactly the wrong direction.

Nothing swallowed ever fills that emptiness, because the lack was never real and cannot be answered by conquest. The pit is not a place the other falls into; it is the darkness the accusing mind is already standing in, mistaking appetite for strength. Wholeness is remembered, never seized, and it returns the moment a mind stops trying to complete itself at another's expense.

The grave: the ego's promise that it can be made whole by taking life in, the swallowing that only deepens the emptiness it feeds. The pit: the darkness of separation the accusing mind already inhabits, the fall it fears is really the state it is choosing.

  1. When you reach for your phone out of emptiness rather than need, set it down for five minutes and let the emptiness just be there. It will not kill you, and it tends to pass.
  2. If you feel the urge to win an argument today, drop it mid sentence and let the other person be right. Check afterward whether you actually lost anything.
  3. Under stress, when you want someone to look smaller so you can feel steadier, do the opposite. Say the thing that makes them look good, and see what it does to your own chest.

What am I trying to take from someone that I was never going to get that way?
