Proverbs 1:22 Meaning How Long

How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

What does Proverbs 1:22 mean?

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There is a strange loyalty the mind keeps to its own smallness. It clings to a comfortable ignorance because true seeing would ask it to lay down the grievances it has grown to love. The scorner is the part that finds a bitter pleasure in judgment, that would rather feel superior in attack than innocent in peace. Refusing knowledge is not stupidity but a choice, a preference for the familiar defense over the unguarded truth.

The question is gentle, not accusing. It only wonders how long a mind will guard the very fear that hurts it, when the door out has never once been locked.

  1. Think of one story you tell about yourself, how someone wronged you, why you are the way you are. Ask yourself what you would have to give up if it stopped being true.
  2. When you are mid argument and you feel the small thrill of being right, say out loud, you might have a point. Watch how much it costs you. That cost is the thing worth looking at.
  3. Next time a message or a headline makes you want to reply with something cutting, let the urge be there and do not send it. See what sits underneath the satisfaction once you stop feeding it.

What have you been defending so long that you forgot you chose it?
