Proverbs 1:27 Meaning When Calamity Overtakes You Like a Storm

when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come on you.

What does Proverbs 1:27 mean?

Fear arrives with the force of weather, a storm that seems to blow in from beyond the mind, sweeping and total and undeserved. Yet the whirlwind is guilt returning home, the mind's own attack thrown outward and now felt as though the world had hurled it back.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Fear arrives with the force of weather, a storm that seems to blow in from beyond the mind, sweeping and total and undeserved. Yet the whirlwind is guilt returning home, the mind's own attack thrown outward and now felt as though the world had hurled it back. Desolation is sent by no enemy. It is separation experienced as loss, the ancient belief in being cut off, wearing the mask of an outside catastrophe.

Nothing happens to such a mind that the mind is not doing to itself. The storm feels external only because its source has been forgotten.

  1. When a day feels like it is attacking you, the traffic, the emails, all of it, pause and ask what you were already carrying before any of it started. Usually something was there first.
  2. When you snap at someone close to you, go back and say what was actually going on in you. Not to excuse it. Just so the storm stops looking like it came from them.
  3. In the middle of a stressful stretch, name the feeling before you act on it. I am overwhelmed. I am embarrassed. Named, it stays yours instead of turning into the weather everyone else has to stand in.

When the day feels like it is coming at you, what part of it did you bring in with you?

Mind makes the world. What you send out comes back wearing a different face and feels like it came from somewhere else.

Take away your opinion about the thing and the harm goes with it. The storm you are standing in is mostly your judgment of it.

Still water shows everything clearly. Stir it up and you blame the picture for being unclear.
