Proverbs 1:29 Meaning Because They Hated Knowledge

because they hated knowledge, and didn’t choose the fear of Yahweh.

What does Proverbs 1:29 mean?

Everything turns on a choice already made. What looks like the world's harshness is only the working out of a decision taken long before, to reject clear seeing and cling instead to the ego's version of things.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Everything turns on a choice already made. What looks like the world's harshness is only the working out of a decision taken long before, to reject clear seeing and cling instead to the ego's version of things. Knowledge was not withheld from such a mind but hated by it, refused because it would end the separation the mind still wished to keep. The whole consequence traces back to this single turning away, freely done and freely reversible.

No fate was imposed. A mind meets the results of its own preference, and the same freedom that refused the truth can choose it whenever it will.

Live Proverbs 1:29 today

  1. When something in your day feels unfair, trace it back one step and ask what you decided earlier that led here. Not to blame yourself, just to see your own hand in it.
  2. In a conversation today, let someone show you something about yourself you would normally wave off. Say "you might be right" and leave it there instead of defending.
  3. In a tense meeting or a heated group chat, pause before you reply and ask if you are reading for the truth or reading for ammunition. You can pick again right there.

Where in my life am I calling something bad luck when it was really a choice I made and could still unmake?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

What we are now comes from what we have thought. The mind makes its own world, and we walk through the one we have been building.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Events do not disturb us; our judgments about them do. The judgment is ours, which is exactly why it can be changed.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita

The mind is the friend of the one who has made it a friend, and the enemy of the one who has not. The difference is a choice, not a fate.
