Proverbs 10:24 Meaning What the Wicked Fear

What the wicked fear, will overtake them, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.

What does Proverbs 10:24 mean?

What the mind holds in fear it quietly asks to see, and so the frightened mind meets, again and again, the very thing it dreads, not as punishment but as the faithful mirror of what it believes. Fear is a request, though it does not know itself as one, and the world obliges by wearing the face the mind expects.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

What the mind holds in fear it quietly asks to see, and so the frightened mind meets, again and again, the very thing it dreads, not as punishment but as the faithful mirror of what it believes. Fear is a request, though it does not know itself as one, and the world obliges by wearing the face the mind expects.

The mind at peace asks for something else. Its desire is granted not because it is rewarded but because it has stopped picturing an enemy, and a mind that pictures no enemy has none to find. Whichever teacher you keep, you will see the world that teacher paints, so the whole freedom of the seer lies in choosing what to hold before the eyes.

Wicked: the mind that teaches itself danger and then finds danger everywhere it looks. Righteous: the mind aligned with love, which asks for peace and therefore meets it.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Fear and faith are one faculty aimed in opposite directions, and whichever one a person holds is what arrives.

Holding an unshakable picture of what must never happen is belief working at full strength, backwards. That certainty sets the state, the state runs on dread, dread drives a person to grasp and strike first, and those actions assemble the very conditions they were braced against. Nobody acquires this faculty; they are already using it, aimed at what they do not want.

Desire carried with that same certainty about the unseen aims the identical machinery forward, and the action it produces is steady rather than frantic, so the want can be granted instead of snatched. Leaving the aim where it sits costs a person years of genuine effort spent building, in detail, the outcome they swore to escape.

  1. When your mind starts running the bad version of a conversation that has not happened yet, stop the rehearsal and set the phone down. You can meet the real one when it arrives.
  2. Walk into your next meeting or family dinner without the story you usually bring about how that person will be. Let them be new for one evening.
  3. When a short reply lands in your inbox and you instantly read coldness into it, try reading it again as a person who was busy, and answer the second version.

What have I been expecting from someone so long that I have stopped checking whether it is true?

Dhammapada 1

All that we are arises with our thoughts, and with our thoughts we make the world. What the mind rehearses is what the eyes eventually find.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus taught that people are disturbed not by events but by their opinions about events, and that fear lives in the judgment rather than the thing. Change the judgment and the thing changes shape.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Zhuangzi tells of a man so afraid of his own shadow and footprints that he ran to escape them and ran himself to death. Standing still in the shade would have ended it at once.
