Proverbs 12:11 Meaning He Who Tills His Land Shall Have

He who tills his land shall have plenty of bread, but he who chases fantasies is void of understanding.

What does Proverbs 12:11 mean?

A mind that works its own ground, that stays with the honest labor of forgiving what is near, is fed by that labor and grows quietly full. The ego prefers to wander after empty figures, chasing images and opinions that promise meaning and deliver hunger.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind that works its own ground, that stays with the honest labor of forgiving what is near, is fed by that labor and grows quietly full. The ego prefers to wander after empty figures, chasing images and opinions that promise meaning and deliver hunger. What is chased outside can never satisfy, because nothing outside was ever the source.

Understanding is not found by following the crowd of thoughts that lead away from home. It is uncovered by tending the field a person already stands in. The mind that stops running finds it was standing on everything it needed.

Land: the mind's own inner ground, the near and present material of the self that yields peace when it is patiently worked Bread: the nourishment of a settled mind, the satisfaction that comes only from tending what is one's own Vain persons: the empty images and borrowed opinions the ego chases outward, phantoms that lead the mind away from its own ground

Live Proverbs 12:11 today

  1. Pick the one near thing you keep stepping over, the unanswered message, the drawer, the apology, and spend fifteen minutes on it today. Stay with it even when a more exciting thought shows up.
  2. Instead of reading opinions about how people should live, call or sit with one actual person in your life and give them your whole attention for the length of a coffee. The real relationship in front of you is the field.
  3. When your feed starts feeding you other people's lives and you feel that familiar emptiness, put the phone in another room and do the next small real task with your hands. Dishes count. So does a walk around the block.

What is right here, already mine to tend, that I keep hoping someone else's life will replace?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen · Dogen

The whole of the way is in the chore in front of you: the cooking, the sweeping, the sitting. Looking past it for something grander is how people miss it entirely.

Bhagavad Gita 3

Better to do your own work imperfectly than to perform someone else's well. Your own ground is the only field you can actually till.

Tao Te Ching 47

You do not have to travel far to understand. The one who keeps chasing the horizon learns less than the one who stays and sees clearly where they stand.
