What a mind speaks reveals which teacher it has chosen to look through. The mind aligned with love reports what is really there, and what is really there is innocence, so its every word quietly shows forth truth. The mind aligned with fear bears false witness, testifying to guilt that was never real, dressing a figure in a dream as though it were a crime. Its whole testimony is a lie about who the other is.

Every account a person gives of another is really an account of the teacher within. To speak the innocence of a brother is to see truly. To accuse is only to describe one's own fear.

False witness: the fearful mind giving testimony against another, the voice that swears to a guilt that was never real and calls the dream a fact

A man reveals what he is made of the moment he opens his mouth about something that matters. Speak what you have seen, accurately, and you set your character in order at the same time. The words are not decoration laid over the self. They are the self, taking a stance in the world and letting reality judge it.

The liar does the reverse. Every false report is a small vote for chaos, a snapped thread in the fabric everyone else depends on to stand. Truth aligns a man with what is. Deceit sets him against it, and the fracture always shows.

Watch how a person talks, and his direction becomes plain.

  1. Think of the person you have quietly written off and tell yourself one true good thing about them. Not a reframe or an excuse, just something accurate you have been leaving out.
  2. When you describe someone to a third person today, tell the version you would be willing to say in front of them. If you would not, that is a sign the story has grown a lie in it.
  3. In a tense moment, describe what actually happened instead of what you think it meant. Say the words and the facts, and leave out the motive you assigned.

When I describe other people, whose story am I actually telling?

To speak truthfully is also to speak without malice, since a report shaped by ill will is already false. What you say about another reveals the state of your own mind.
