Proverbs 12:26 · World English Bible
A righteous person is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
The one at peace does not stand above the neighbor as a better man; what is meant is that such a mind serves as a guide, showing by its own quiet the way out of fear. To have chosen love is to become a light others can walk toward, not because one is superior, but because one is pointing home.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The one at peace does not stand above the neighbor as a better man; what is meant is that such a mind serves as a guide, showing by its own quiet the way out of fear. To have chosen love is to become a light others can walk toward, not because one is superior, but because one is pointing home.
The way of separation seduces because it flatters the self it invents, promising safety in specialness and strength in attack. It leads the mind astray by making the dream look like the truth. The whole difference is one of direction, for one mind lights a path outward from fear, and the other wanders deeper in, mistaking the wandering for the way.
Neighbour: another mind on the same road, the one a mind at peace may guide simply by the direction it faces Way: the road the mind travels, either a path lit toward love or a wandering the ego makes look like home

SUFISM
Ṣuḥba: Companionship Al-Ghazali gave long attention to how a person picks friends, and the reason is plain. Who you spend your hours with slowly sets what you find normal, funny, and worth wanting, and the shift arrives without any decision. Choosing company turns out to be choosing what you will slowly become.
A person follows the religion of their close friend, so look at whom you befriend: closeness decides direction The saying comes from the Prophet, and it reads as a flat observation about how people work. Those closest to you become the ones you measure yourself against without meaning to, and their standards quietly drift into yours. A hard look early costs far less than untangling a friendship that has already reshaped you.
Firāsa: Discernment Sufis use this word for the read you get on someone when your heart is not busy wanting something from them. Wanting a favor, or approval, or a seat in a certain circle fogs the read every time. Once those wants quiet down, the small dishonesty and the casual cruelty register early instead of getting explained away.
Do not keep company with anyone whose state does not lift you and whose words do not point you to God: closeness is chosen with care Ibn Ata Allah left this line among his sayings. His test is simple: after an evening with someone you come away steadier or you come away smaller, and you usually know which one happened. Most people feel that answer clearly and then argue themselves out of it, because the friendship is old or comfortable.
Istidrāj: Being drawn on step by step The Quran uses this word for a slow slide that feels, from inside, like nothing is going wrong. Nobody picks a bad road at the start; the road tilts one degree at a time, and each step looks small next to the one before it. By the time the direction is obvious, a person has been walking it for years and calls it simply their life.
Christian Psychology lens
If someone followed my direction today, where would it take them?
The sage leads without pushing and teaches without speaking, so people follow and think they chose it themselves.
One lamp lights another and loses nothing. A calm person in a tense room changes the room without saying a word.
We learn more from the person living well in front of us than from any lecture. Choose who you spend time near with care, because direction is contagious.
