Proverbs 12:3 Meaning A Man Shall Not Be Established

A man shall not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

What does Proverbs 12:3 mean?

Nothing built on the belief in separation can hold, because it stands on an illusion and illusions have no ground beneath them. The ego labors to make itself permanent through attack and cleverness, yet whatever rests on fear is already passing, for fear was never real and cannot support a lasting thing.

Nothing built on the belief in separation can hold, because it stands on an illusion and illusions have no ground beneath them. What is rooted in love cannot be shaken, not because it defends itself well but because it draws its life from a truth that no threat can reach. A mind anchored there is not made secure by its own effort. It is steady because it rests in what was always so, and what is real has no need to be established and no way to be moved.

Root: the mind's true foundation in love, the anchor in what is real that no fear or attack can disturb or overturn

  1. When the worry loops at night about something that might go wrong, ask what is actually in your hands here. Usually it is one small thing, and the rest you can set down.
  2. The next time you are tempted to look more impressive to someone than you are, just be accurate instead. Being known is steadier ground than being admired.
  3. When a deadline or a hard conversation is coming, feel your feet on the floor for a few breaths before you start. The pressure is real, you are not made of it.

What in my life am I holding up with effort that could not stand on its own?

What is forced into place does not stay in place. What grows from a real root needs no propping up.

Buddhism · Impermanence

Everything put together comes apart, so building your security out of possessions and position is building on sand. What does not come apart was never assembled.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Some things are in our hands and some are not. Stand your life on what is actually yours, your own choices, and nothing outside can knock it over.
