Proverbs 12:8 Meaning A Man Shall Be Commended According

A man shall be commended according to his wisdom, but he who has a warped mind shall be despised.

What does Proverbs 12:8 mean?

A mind is met in the world according to the teacher it has chosen, for the wisdom that draws praise here is simply the peace of a mind that has laid down attack and looks on others without fear. What returns to it as honor is really the reflection of the innocence it first extended.

Christian Psychology

A mind is met in the world according to the teacher it has chosen, for the wisdom that draws praise here is simply the peace of a mind that has laid down attack and looks on others without fear. What returns to it as honor is really the reflection of the innocence it first extended.

The contempt the ego dreads is not poured on it from outside. A mind twisted by the belief in separation despises itself, and then, unable to bear that judgment, imagines the scorn coming toward it from others. The correction is to see that both the honor and the contempt begin within, so a mind that changes teachers changes what it will meet.

Heart: the core of the mind where it chooses its teacher, either at peace with love or twisted by the belief in separation and so despising itself

  1. Before you unlock your phone this morning, sit with it face down for a minute and ask what you are hoping to find there. If the honest answer is some sign that people think well of you, let the wanting be there without feeding it, then open the phone anyway and read with easier eyes.
  2. With one person today, a coworker, your partner, the cashier, look for something genuinely good in them and say it out loud without softening it into a joke. Watch what happens in your own chest when you hand that over, and keep it, because the warmth is the point.
  3. When a message lands flat or a meeting comment stings, pause before you reply and ask whether the contempt you are feeling actually came from them or was already waiting inside you. Answer the words that were really said, not the ones your fear filled in.

Where did I meet my own judgment today and mistake it for someone else's?

Dhammapada

What you are now is the sum of what you have thought. The mind sends out its own weather, and the world you walk through is largely that weather coming back to you.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

No one can truly harm you without your own judgment agreeing to the harm. The sting you feel from another's scorn is something your own opinion adds.

Tao Te Ching 33

To know others is a kind of cleverness, but to know yourself is clear sight. The one who has made peace inside has nothing left to defend outside.
