Proverbs 13:17 Meaning A Wicked Messenger Falls Into Trouble

A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy gains healing.

What does Proverbs 13:17 mean?

Every thought the mind sends out is a messenger, carrying either the ego's report of guilt or the Spirit's word of innocence, and the message returns to shape the one who sent it. A thought of attack seems aimed at a brother but falls back on its source, tangling the mind in the trouble it wished on another, because what is given is what is received.

Christian Psychology

Every thought the mind sends out is a messenger, carrying either the ego's report of guilt or the Spirit's word of innocence, and the message returns to shape the one who sent it. A thought of attack seems aimed at a brother but falls back on its source, tangling the mind in the trouble it wished on another, because what is given is what is received. The messenger of fear brings home only fear.

But a thought that carries forgiveness, that goes out to see a brother as innocent, returns as healing to the mind that sent it. Nothing was done to the world; the whole exchange happened within. The health is not a reward earned outside but the natural echo of a loving thought coming back to its home.

Messenger: a thought of attack the mind sends out, seeming aimed at another but falling back to trouble its own source. Ambassador: a thought of forgiveness the mind extends, carrying innocence outward and returning as healing to the one who sent it.

Live Proverbs 13:17 today

  1. Before you hit send on anything sharp, read it once as if it had been written to you. If it would sting you, it will sting them, and it will come back.
  2. Say one genuinely good thing about someone today, to their face or in a group chat where they will see it. Small, specific, no occasion needed.
  3. When someone comes at you badly, in an email or across a kitchen, answer the person rather than the tone. You get to decide what you hand back.

What am I sending out today, and would I want it returned to me?

What is hateful to you, do not do to another. The whole of it is there, and the rest is commentary.

Resentment settles nothing and leaves a residue in the one who holds it. What goes out comes back to the sender.
