Proverbs 14:10 Meaning The Heart Knows Its Own Bitterness

The heart knows its own bitterness and joy; he will not share these with a stranger.

What does Proverbs 14:10 mean?

Every feeling a mind holds is chosen within and belongs to no one outside. The bitterness it carries was not placed there by another; it is the taste of the ego's own guilt, kept private and blamed on the world.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Every feeling a mind holds is chosen within and belongs to no one outside. The bitterness it carries was not placed there by another; it is the taste of the ego's own guilt, kept private and blamed on the world. And the joy it may know is just as inward, a peace no outer circumstance can hand over or take away.

The stranger who cannot enter is the whole outside seeming, the world the ego insists is the cause of what the mind feels. But nothing external ever reaches in to author the mind's state. Because the feeling was decided within, it can be undone within, and the mind that made its own bitterness is free to choose peace instead.

Stranger: the outer world the ego blames for the mind's feelings, the seeming outsider that in truth can neither cause nor share what the mind chooses within

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

There is a depth in you that no other person can enter, a place where bitterness is felt and joy quietly rises, untouched by the world outside. The mind wants others to fully understand your pain and share your happiness, and suffers when they cannot.

Here is where you meet yourself alone, in the still awareness that holds every feeling without judging it. Because this space belongs to you and no one else can reach it, the peace you long for is found by turning inward, not by waiting for another to give it.

Live Proverbs 14:10 today

  1. When something ruins your mood today, trace it back and find the exact thought you had about it, not just the event. The thought is the part you can actually work with.
  2. Instead of expecting someone to fix how you feel, just tell them plainly what is going on with you. Not as a demand, only so they know.
  3. In the slow grocery line or the stalled traffic, catch the moment you decide to be irritated. You can set it down right there, and nothing outside has to change.

If no one out there put this feeling in me, what would it mean to set it down?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

Some things are within our power and some are not. Our judgments and reactions are ours; events and other people are not, and peace comes from knowing the line.

Dhammapada

The mind precedes everything we experience; suffering and joy both follow from it. The world does not install our feelings in us.

Zen

It is not the flag moving, and not the wind moving. It is your own mind that moves.
