Proverbs 16:14 Meaning The King’s Wrath Is a Messenger

The king’s wrath is a messenger of death, but a wise man will pacify it.

What does Proverbs 16:14 mean?

Anger in a mind sends out its heralds ahead of it, and everywhere they go they announce attack and expect it back. The wrath of even the ruling part of a mind darkens the whole inner kingdom, projecting a threat that then seems to close in from outside.

Christian Psychology

Anger in a mind sends out its heralds ahead of it, and everywhere they go they announce attack and expect it back. The wrath of even the ruling part of a mind darkens the whole inner kingdom, projecting a threat that then seems to close in from outside. What the mind flings out as fury returns to it wearing the face of death.

But a mind that has grown wise knows how to still that storm before it spreads. It does not fight the anger or feed it; it looks past the grievance to the innocence beneath and lets the heat drain away. To pacify wrath is the miracle in miniature, a quiet change of teacher that disarms the messengers before they can deliver their fear.

King: the ruling part of a mind whose moods color its whole inner world, calm or aflame by the teacher it chooses. Messengers of death: the heralds anger sends ahead, the projected threats that go out as attack and return as fear.

Live Proverbs 16:14 today

  1. When anger shows up today, name it quietly and let it stand there a minute before you act on it. It usually shrinks in the open.
  2. If someone comes at you heated, answer the fear under their words instead of the words. Most anger is somebody scared and out of options.
  3. In a stressful moment, traffic or a deadline or a line that is not moving, feel the heat rising and let your shoulders drop instead of your mood.

What was I actually afraid of the last time I got angry?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Conquer anger with non-anger, and the one who gives nothing back ends the quarrel. Hatred fed by hatred has no stopping place.

Stoicism · Seneca

He wrote a whole book on anger and said the best cure is delay. Give the heat time and it loses most of its argument.

Tao Te Ching 78

What is soft overcomes what is hard. The gentle answer is not weakness, it is the thing that actually ends the storm.
