CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

What a mind extends is what opens the way before it. Give from love, and love goes ahead and makes a place; give attack, and attack arranges the world that meets you. The mind is forever setting the terms of its own welcome, because what it holds out is what it will be shown in return. Nothing comes to it that it did not first offer.

The true gift asks nothing and costs the body nothing, for it is only the willingness to see another as innocent. That single offering brings the mind into the presence of everything real, because it has finally stopped defending its separation.

Gift: the mind's extension of itself, love or fear held out, which prepares the world that comes to meet it. Great men: the truth and reality the mind draws near to once it gives from love, the presence of what is changeless and whole.

Live Proverbs 18:16 today

  1. Before you open your phone in the morning, decide what you are bringing to the people in it. The first message you send sets the weather for the rest.
  2. Pick one person today you have quietly filed as difficult, and give them one thing that costs nothing: real attention, the benefit of the doubt, a question you actually wait to hear the answer to.
  3. When someone snaps at you in traffic or in a meeting, hold back the matching snap. You can hand back something different, and what you hand back is what you will be standing in all afternoon.

What am I holding out to people today without realizing it?

The same truth in other traditions

Dhammapada 1

What we are today comes from the thoughts we held yesterday, and what we hold now builds the world that will meet us tomorrow. The mind goes first, and everything follows behind it.

Tao Te Ching 81

The wise give without emptying themselves, because giving freely is the one act that never runs out. What is held out openly returns by a road no one had to arrange.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Kindness offered without any hope of return is the strongest thing a person owns, and it cannot be refused by anyone. The giver is changed by it before the receiver ever is.
