Proverbs 18:15 Meaning The Heart of the Discerning Gets Knowledge

The heart of the discerning gets knowledge. The ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

What does Proverbs 18:15 mean?

There is a kind of learning that is really remembering. The mind that turns willingly toward truth is not gathering new facts about the world; it is opening to what it always was beneath the ego's noise, and this opening is the whole of wisdom.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There is a kind of learning that is really remembering. The mind that turns willingly toward truth is not gathering new facts about the world; it is opening to what it always was beneath the ego's noise, and this opening is the whole of wisdom. To seek in this way is already to be found, for what is sought is one's own reality.

Wisdom is not cleverness about a world of separate things. It is the mind growing quiet enough to let love teach it what fear could never show, which is that it was never separate at all.

Heart: the deep place of choosing where the mind turns toward truth or away from it. Ear: the mind's willingness to listen, the openness through which love's answer is received instead of fear's.

Live Proverbs 18:15 today

  1. Give five minutes today to sitting without input, no podcast, no feed, nothing to learn. The quiet is not empty, and you will find you already knew something you had been talking over.
  2. Ask someone a real question about their life and let yourself be curious instead of informative. Being genuinely interested teaches you more than anything you would have said instead.
  3. When you feel certain you already know how something will go, loosen that for one minute and look again. Certainty is comfortable and it is usually the thing standing between you and what is actually happening.

What have I stopped being curious about because I assumed I already understood it?

Zen

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. Learning here is less about adding something and more about dropping what blocks the view.

Hinduism · Upanishads

The truth you are seeking is already what you are, and the search ends in recognition rather than discovery. You cannot travel to where you already stand.

Sufism · Rumi

Do not keep hunting for love. Clear away what you built against it, and it turns out to have been there the whole time.
