Proverbs 18:8 Meaning The Words of a Gossip Are Like

The words of a gossip are like dainty morsels: they go down into a person’s innermost parts.

What does Proverbs 18:8 mean?

A grievance carried and retold is guilt looking for a home. The mind that whispers of another's fault is not describing the other; it is feeding its own belief in separation, and the tale it tells sinks past the surface and settles where it will be believed.

Christian Psychology

A grievance carried and retold is guilt looking for a home. The mind that whispers of another's fault is not describing the other; it is feeding its own belief in separation, and the tale it tells sinks past the surface and settles where it will be believed. What enters this deep is not information but a decision to see attack as real.

The wound is never delivered from outside. A mind chooses to receive the story, and in receiving it agrees that someone is guilty, which is only ever its own guilt wearing a borrowed face. Forgiveness lets the tale fall unbelieved, and then there is nothing there to wound.

Talebearer: the ego voice within, the teacher of fear that carries word of guilt from one part of the mind to another to keep separation alive.

Live Proverbs 18:8 today

  1. When a piece of news about someone arrives and you feel the small pull to believe the worst, hold it loosely. You heard one version from one person on one day, and that is all you heard.
  2. If a friend starts telling you what someone did, let the story land without agreeing to the conclusion. A quiet "I don't really know what's going on with them" ends the whole thing kindly.
  3. When a thread or an email chain is building a case against someone, do not forward it, do not add the detail you know. Let it stop with you and lose its momentum.

Whose story am I carrying today that I never actually needed to pick up?

Buddhism · Right Speech

Words that divide people from each other do their deepest damage inside the person who carries them. Gossip is a seed that takes root in whoever plants it.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You are not injured by what someone reports to you, only by the judgment you add to it. Drop the judgment and the injury has nowhere to sit.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

A story passed from mouth to mouth grows heavier at every stop, until nobody remembers it was only ever a story.
