Proverbs 18:9 Meaning One Who Is Slack in His Work

One who is slack in his work is brother to him who is a master of destruction.

What does Proverbs 18:9 mean?

There is one work the mind is here to do, and that is to forgive. To let the mind drift, refusing the small correction each moment offers, is not neutral; it quietly undoes as surely as open attack does.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

There is one work the mind is here to do, and that is to forgive. To let the mind drift, refusing the small correction each moment offers, is not neutral; it quietly undoes as surely as open attack does. The one who will not choose love and the one who tears down are the same choice wearing two faces, for both leave the healing unmade.

What is not chosen for love is left to fear by default. A mind that neglects its one function has not stayed still; it has spent the day building the very world it fears. Do the work, which asks nothing of the body and only that the mind change its teacher.

Brother: the recognition that two seeming opposites, the idle and the destructive, share one mind and one choice, so what looks like a lesser fault is kin to the greater.

  1. When a small irritation shows up today, the slow driver, the delayed reply, deal with it in your own head right then instead of letting it sit and sour. Letting it sit is not resting, it is deciding.
  2. If there is someone you have been quietly cool toward, send the ordinary message you have been not sending. Nothing dramatic, just a normal line that ends the freeze.
  3. In a moment where you could soften and you would rather stay annoyed, pick the softening even though you do not feel like it. Doing nothing here is not staying out of it.

Where am I calling it patience when it is really just avoidance?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita

Doing nothing is still a choice, and it carries its own result. There is no standing outside the stream of what you are shaping.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You can stop now, or you can keep putting off the person you mean to be. Every postponed hour is spent on something, usually on the old habit.

Zen

There is no neutral ground on the path. The one who sits down and the one who walks backward end up in the same place.
