Proverbs 2:16 Meaning To Deliver You From the Strange Woman

to deliver you from the strange woman, even from the foreigner who flatters with her words,

What does Proverbs 2:16 mean?

The strange woman is not a person to be feared but a temptation of the mind, the sweet voice that promises peace on the ego's terms. Her flattery is every thought that tells a mind it can be safe while still holding a brother guilty, that it may keep the grievance and be happy too.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The strange woman is not a person to be feared but a temptation of the mind, the sweet voice that promises peace on the ego's terms. Her flattery is every thought that tells a mind it can be safe while still holding a brother guilty, that it may keep the grievance and be happy too.

What makes her dangerous is only that she sounds kind. A mind is delivered the moment it hears beneath the flattery the old song of separation, and prefers the plain truth of love, which asks it to give up nothing real and lay down only the wish to be deceived.

Strange woman: the tempting voice within the mind, the promise of peace that lets it keep its grievances. Stranger: the same seduction seen as coming from outside, the flattery that feels like comfort and hides the call to separate.

Deliverance comes when the mind stops trusting the outward-turning appetite that has married it to the senses instead of to its own source. In Hebrew this appetite is zar, the foreign, the alien current that pulls awareness out through the eyes and the skin toward whatever glitters on the surface. Its flattery is the report the 5 senses carry back, sweet-sounding and always about appearances, and the mind that believes every pleasant whisper spends a whole life on the surface of things and never turns inward, where the real treasure sits. Wisdom is the quiet inner knowing that no longer takes the senses at their word.

Strange woman: the outward-turning appetite that weds the mind to the passing world of the senses rather than to its own inner source Flattering words: the sweet reports the 5 senses carry back, always praising the surface of things and never the depth within

  1. When a thought arrives that makes you feel completely in the right about someone, pause before you enjoy it. Ask whether the comfort it is offering depends on them staying wrong.
  2. If a friend texts to agree that the other person was awful, feel how good that lands, then say the honest thing instead. Something like, I might have my own part in this.
  3. Under pressure, when a reply forms that would land hard and feel satisfying, do not send it. The ease it promises is bought with distance.

What grievance am I holding onto because keeping it feels like peace?

The second arrow is the one we fire ourselves. The story that soothes us by blaming another feels like relief and keeps the wound open.
