CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind that will not stir invents a danger outside to justify its stillness. It paints a beast in the road and calls the fear wisdom, and by that single stroke every street becomes a place of death and every step a risk. This is how guilt protects itself: it dresses its own reluctance as a threat that comes from without, so the refusal to move looks like prudence rather than fear.

There is no lion. The danger was manufactured within and then set loose upon the world, so the one who dreamed it could stay safely behind the door. What frightens such a mind is never the street but its own unwillingness to leave the darkness it has grown to trust.

Lion: the imagined menace the mind places outside itself, its own fear wearing the shape of an enemy in the road Streets: the open field of life the mind refuses to enter, kept deadly by the terror it projects onto it

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

The mind will build you a lion whenever going out costs more than staying in.

The refusal comes first and the reason arrives afterward wearing the costume of information. A nervous system that has linked effort to pain and the indoors to relief will commission whatever belief protects that arrangement, and a predator in the road works far better than an honest sentence about not wanting to get up.

What makes it permanent is that he never walks to the door and looks. From the inside, an untested certainty feels exactly like knowledge, so the street stays lethal in his mind for the rest of his life. Every morning he stays put becomes one more reference that he was right, and the world he is willing to enter gets smaller.

Live Proverbs 22:13 today

  1. Pick the one task you have been circling all week and set a timer for five minutes on it. You are not trying to finish, just to find out whether the lion in the road was actually there.
  2. Send the message you have been drafting in your head for days to the person you owe it to. The imagined reaction is almost always worse than the real one.
  3. Next time a decision feels dangerous, write down in one line what you are actually afraid will happen. Fear shrinks when it has to be specific.

What have you been calling caution that might simply be a door you do not want to open?

Stoicism · Seneca

We suffer more in imagination than in reality. Many of the things we dread never arrive, and the dread itself did all the damage.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Fear is born of the mind's own clinging. Loosen the grip and there is nothing left out there to flee from.

A man sees a rope on the road at dusk and runs from a snake. The running was real. The snake never was.
