Proverbs 22:27 Meaning If You Don’t Have Means to Pay

If you don’t have means to pay, why should he take away your bed from under you?

What does Proverbs 22:27 mean?

A mind that has bound itself to another's debt of guilt lies down each night on ground it fears will be pulled away. The bed is the place of rest, the peace the mind was meant to lie in, and when it has pledged itself to settle sins it cannot pay, even rest is mortgaged to the fear of reckoning.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind that has bound itself to another's debt of guilt lies down each night on ground it fears will be pulled away. The bed is the place of rest, the peace the mind was meant to lie in, and when it has pledged itself to settle sins it cannot pay, even rest is mortgaged to the fear of reckoning. Nothing is safe once guilt is treated as a debt owed.

The question itself points to the way out. Why surrender your peace to secure a payment for something that never truly happened? A mind that never signs the bond keeps its rest untouched, and lies down in a peace that no creditor of guilt can come to claim.

Bed: the peace the mind was meant to rest in, the tranquility surrendered when guilt is taken on as a debt.

  1. Tonight, when the mind starts the late replay of everything you owe and everything you got wrong, put the phone across the room and let the accounting wait. The debt will be no larger in the morning.
  2. Tell one person, a partner, a friend, about the thing you have been privately carrying. Saying it out loud often shows you how much of it was never yours.
  3. In the middle of a tense day, take two minutes somewhere quiet and do nothing useful at all. Rest is not a reward for settling up.

What have I put up as collateral that I never actually had to?

The one who knows when enough is enough is never in debt. Grasping for more is how rest gets spent.

The first arrow is what happened. The second is the worry and self-blame you add, and that is the one that keeps you awake.

You can give up your peace at any moment by consenting to be disturbed. Nothing outside you can take it unless you sign it away.
